The annoying thing about a nickname is that it is possible for it to seem totally inoffensive, but really affect the morale of a person at the same time. What is even worse is if this happens in the workplace, and there are only so many times that an overly familiar coworker can be corrected.
This is what one man had to deal with when he introduced himself to the new guy as Chris, but his colleague insisted on referring to him as Topher. Despite he and his supervisor correcting him, he persisted with calling him the wrong name.

After so many misnaming incidents, enough was enough. Chris decided that if he was not going to be called by his name, he was not going to respond to it.
Understandably, this was the final straw. It was an interaction that would have some very undesirable consequences in just three weeks' time, when the coworker demanded Chris pick him up when he dropped off his rental car after a trip because he knew that he worked late.

After numerous, increasingly frantic calls and emails, this entitled colleague was raging the next day at work. It led to him being pulled into the supervisor's office, and left Chris having to explain himself.
“I simply explained my side of the story and gave him the printed emails. I had highlighted the parts where he was threatening me. Supervisor: ”Okay, I understand why you didn't want to help him… with these threats and his behavior, he's not going to continue with us. But next time, try to be the bigger person."
While the supervisor was not impressed with the revenge that had been enacted on the now former coworker, he swiftly got rid of the problem. It may not have been the most elegant way to stop the annoyance, but it certainly worked.
